SmallAir™ Pool

General features of SmallAir™-Pool

SmallAir™-Pool is an in vitro tissue model of the lower human airway epithelium (bronchiolar region after the 5th division if the airway). This mix of cells is used to reconstitute a lower airway epithelium cultured at the air liquid interface (ALI). It is a powerful and predictive model for in vitro research and tests.

SmallAir tissue is mainly composed of the following cell types:

  • Basal cells (progenitor cells)
  • Club cells (cuboidal cell, known to be metabolically active cells)
  • Ciliated cells (with active cilia)
  • Goblet cells (present in low proportion, mucus producing cells)

The advantages of SmallAir™-Pool

Using a pool of donors have remarkable advantages:

  • The individual donor response is averaged in one single epithelium.
  • Experiments involving different donors are therefore less necessary
  • Large batches of primary cells allows long term availabilities of the stocks (compared to stocks of monodonor)

A unique process for tissue production

Since 2023 we produce SmallAir™-Pool with high standards of quality and reproducibility. The tissue production is GIVIMP certified since 2023.

A large panel of small airway healthy donors are individually tested for their proliferation and differentiation capacities. A narrowed selection of 5 different donor candidates having similar characteristics is selected to constitute the pool. Functional QC finally validates the batch of donors.

To ensure high predictability, SmallAir™-Pool is solely reconstituted using low passage human primary cells. The primary cells are isolated from human biological samples, under ethical approval and donor consent. Each batch of tissue is delivered with a certificate of analysis (COA) with donor information and quality control (QC) results.

Our models mimic the same characteristics of in vivo tissues than SmallAir™.

An easy and ready-to-use model

We handle all the production and QC process to deliver SmallAir™-Pool ready-to-use at your lab. No fancy equipment or cell culture skills are required for its maintenance.

Once received, transfer the tissues in fresh medium and put it in the incubator. Then change the medium twice a week, occasionally perform a mucus wash. That’s it.

SmallAir culture medium, dedicated, chemically defined and serum-free culture medium ensures a stable composition from batch to batch.
